Advice On How To Deal With A Plumbing Situation

If you have never owned a house before, it is crucial to know that plumbing problems may happen quite soon after buying a new home. Plumbing issues can occur in any room in the house, but usually happen in the kitchen or bathroom. Actually, sooner or later all homeowners will experience a plumbing issue of some sort. This article contains some information to help when that situation occurs.

You need to insulate any pipes have exposure to outside elements to avoid them freezing. You should also keep the temperature in the home above freezing to avoid your pipes freezing. The pipes will be able to freeze if the temperature surrounding the pipes drops below freezing. If you are lucky, you will only experience a minor inconvenience until the pipes thaw. The other option is the pipes may burst, which would result in significant repair costs and a mess to clean up.

If you have a pipe that freezes, you should turn on the faucet that is close to the pipe; this way, the water has a place to go. This gives the pressure somewhere to go, and can keep them from bursting.

Don't use harsh chemicals such as toilet tablets in your toilet. They may get rid of toilet odors, but they can damage the rubber in the toilet, which can cause it to break down completely or to not function at all.

If your toilet's water level is low, the toilet is clogged up, and using a plunger isn't resolving the issue, hold a bucket filled with warm water at about your waistline, and pour it into your toilet. Do this every time the water level gets too low.

Never put your hands in your garbage disposal to fix a problem. Even if the disposal is turned off, it can still be hazardous. Locate your garbage disposal manual, or do an Internet search for troubleshooting advice and a diagram that illustrates your model.

Make sure there is a strainer covering all drains in order to collect particles that would cause a clog if they went down the drain. Clean debris from these strainers after each use. Bathtubs should be equipped with strainers as well, and they too will need to be cleaned regularly.

Water from wells can cause orange or rust colored stains in places like bathtubs and sinks. This comes from large amounts of iron present in the water. A water softener is the easiest way to solve hard water problems relating to rust, but you can also consult a plumber if you are unsure.

Set up a time when all plumbing work will be completed at one time. While you may be tempted to call the plumber whenever you have a slight problem, scheduling it all at once gives you the opportunity to save money to pay for the repairs. It is a lot more cost effective as you will only be paying for one call-out fee instead of multiple trips.

Plumbing problems are bound to happen, so it's important to be prepared. Anyone that owns a home should also know a little bit about plumbing. If you've got a plumbing issue down the road, the tips you learned should help you a lot.
